15 Jun 10 - "The chicks, aged between a few weeks old and about
two-months-old and covered only with down feathers, succumbed to the
cold and wet weather which has hit Bird Island," South Africa
National Parks spokeswoman Megan Taplin said in a statement.
With only 700 breeding pairs of African penguins on Bird Island, the
death of over half the populations' chicks - in just 24 hours -
presents an "added threat" to the dwindling numbers of penguins.

"How much more global warming will we all need to suffer before
the
truth hits home that's it's getting cold
out there, very cold in fact?"
asks Hans. " Nearly 21 June here in the UK
and I still wear a jersey
and coat when going outside during the
day."
